The Cinque Terre, is a coastal area in the northwest of Italy and is comprises five separate villages:
Riomaggiore, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Monterosso al Mare.
The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Time to start down to the waterfront.
images/220421/P4216427.jpg images/220421/P4216428.jpg
Over the centuries, people have built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the Ligurian Sea.

On the left side of the waterfront was a steep set of steps going to a lookout over the bay.

Peaches was tired after the busy climb up and down.
images/220421/P4216476.jpg
After a good workout we decided it was lunch time.
images/220421/P4216477.jpg
Time to find the famous railroad that connects all of Cinque Terre.
images/220421/P4216479.jpg
More steps, up to the train platform.
images/220421/P4216483.jpg images/220421/P4216484.jpg
The train enters the platform from a tunnel and leaves thru another tunnel.
Access to Cinque Terre by car is limited. A road to Vernazza is very narrow and ends 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) before the town.
Local trains run to all five towns within Cinque Terre, as well as to major regional and national destinations.
The Cinque Terre railway stations are located on the Genoa-Pisa line. Some of the long-distance trains do stop in Cinque Terre towns

Oratory of Santa Maria Assunta
images/220421/P4216492.jpg
This is a small, very simple but beautiful, place of worship for Riomaggiore.

We are heading up to the bus.
images/220421/P4216497.jpg
But NOT by these stairs.

If you grow grapes in an area where there is limited roads access to transport the grapes ...
images/220421/P4216515.jpg
If you live in an area there are few roads and the terrain prevents access for supplies ...
images/220421/P4216512.jpg images/220421/P4216513.jpg
Then you need an alternate method to transport your supplies and grapes. They have Monorail Electric Carts to carry supplies and grapes UP and DOWN the steep terrain.
images/220421/P4216505.jpg images/220421/P4216599.jpg
Everywhere you look you will see grape vinayrds on the steep terrain.

images/220421/P4216528.jpg
Vineyards are pretty and productive but to make a profit you need transportation.
images/220421/P4216530.jpg
Lets look at some of the roads.
images/220421/P4216600.jpg
Switchbacks tight and on this one the small bus had to back-up to get around.
images/220421/P4216606.jpg
You can count 6 turns to drive thru this area. The bus driver was working hard that day.

Verazza is built along a stream that ends at the waterfront. Downhill we go.
