Volcanic landscapes: Our tour left the coast and drove inland thru the Timanfaya National Park. A jagged, harsh, wild landscape where the most sepulchral silence is especially noticeable. Nature has chosen a special palette of colours for this scenery, mixing reds and oranges with ochres, greys and blacks. |
Echadero de los Camellos: (Camel Ride) Very close to the entrance to the National Park is the Echadero de los Camellos. We stopped for a short view & photos of the camels that were available. If you had more time one could experience a ride around the volcanoes, feeling the breeze and hearing the crunching of fragments of lava. |
Winegrowing Landscape: The landscape of La Geria is one of Lanzarote's biggest surprises. A large area covered by little fragments of black volcanic rock flung out during eruptions of Timanfaya has been used by Lanzarote farmers for growing vines. This material is able to retain the humidity of the night air, essential on an island where there is barely any rain. A traditional technique that combines with the characteristic stone walls for protecting the vines from the wind. We stopped at the Antonio Suarez SL and tasted their wine. |
Monumento Al Campesino: The distinctive Monumento a la Fecundidad marks the entrance to the Monumento al Campesino in San Bartolome. The white sculpture was constructed from disused water tanks and stands 15 metres high. Dedicated to the conejero farmers who work so hard to produce crops from the volcanic land in Lanzarote. At the rear of the centre is a courtyard with a series of rooms facing on to the central feature where a spiral staircase has been installed into an old stone quarry. Each of the rooms represents a different artisan craft and a shop offers traditional crafts and gifts for sale. |
