the Upper Portage Camp, at the White Bear Islands, to the Lower Portage Camp, was a considerable effort. Moving 17 3/4 miles and 759 feet presented many problems. After 5 days of preperation the move started on 21-June-1805 and was completed on 2-July-1805. This was one of the most grueling undertakings on the entire expedition. Wheels were made for the canoes and the baggage had been placed in the 6 canoes |
