The South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company was established in 1828. William Aiken, president of the Railroad Company hired Horatio Allen, a distinguished engineer to build a railroad from Charleston to Hamburg, South Carolina. Horatio Allen had identified two ways to run the railroad from Charleston to Hamburg. The railroad surveyor Alfred Dexter was sent to the area confirmed that there were two potential routes. There was a longer route with a gentle slope that would allow engines to travel without assistance and a shorter one which had an uphill grade that was a problem for steam locomotives of the day. Col. Williams, a wealthy landowner, made a secret pact with Dexter to assure the railroad went through his land on the shorter route with the promise that his daughter, Sarah, whom Dexter had fallen in love with, would be his to marry if this route was chosen. Love was and still is a powerful motivator. Dexter convinced Allen, to select the shorter route. Work began in 1830 and on October 2, 1833, the first train arrived in the area which was to become Aiken. The town was named in honor of the railroad president. |
