The church was first built in 1683-1684, a simple wooden building.
The second church was completed in 1789, a brick building. The building was lost in the earthquake in 1843.
The present Cathedral completed in 1847 and consecrated as a Cathe dral and Perish Church of St. Jophn in 1848.
The Cathedral was severely damaged in the earthquake of 1974.and restoration has been inprogress for many years.
In 2009 engineers examined the building and found major areas of damage and ware. Restoration of the building is currently in progress.
