 12-May-2019, Train to Silverton

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad is a 138 year old historical treasure, a once-in-a lifetime bucket list experiential adventure. It provides an unparalleled opportunity to experience one of the last surviving narrow guage trains while connecting with the wild and unspoiled beauty of nature while eiding through remote wilderness of the San Juan National Forest.

When we arrive in Silverton we found an old mining town with little changed. The only paved road in town is US-550. The buildings are mostly the origional style that would have been built during the mining rush.

We ate lunch at the "Lone Spur Cafe". When we entered we found an old piano being played, a large bar, good servide, reasonable priced menu, and really good food. The Onion Soup was the best I have ever tasted.

I wish we would have had more time in town to visit some of the old mines.

I do not recomment using US-550 from the north as a way to enter Silverton. Tight switch-backs and steep dropoff from the road.

 11-May-2019, Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park was created in 1906 to protect the archeological heritage of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years, A.D. 600 to 1300. The views of the Mesa area show the wonder of nature and the Cliff Dwellings are hard to believe.

We were lucky and were able to get tickets for a Ranger tour of the "Cliff Palace". The tour is just over an hour. The site is located just below the top of a mesa cliff, under an overhanging ledge. We went down to the site using over 100 steps and a ladder. After the tour we climed back up using 3 ladders, about 15' each, and many steps. This site contained the homes of about 150 Pueblo people.

This was an exciting tour and very informative.
